Renee Good Lawsuits: What Her Family Alleges
Video · 3:08 · Watch on YouTube
Renee Good, 37, was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis on Jan. 7, 2026. On Oct. 1, 2026, her brother and her partner filed two federal lawsuits: a wrongful-death claim against the United States, and a civil-rights conspiracy claim against federal officials and agents. These are allegations: no court has ruled, and no one has been charged. The government's position is below.
What's confirmed
WHAT THE COMPLAINTS ALLEGE (allegations, not findings)
- Jan. 7, 2026Renee Nicole Good, 37, a poet and mother of three, was fatally shot by an ICE agent on Portland Avenue, south Minneapolis. (AP; KSTP; FOX 9)
- Jan. 23, 2026The Hennepin County Medical Examiner listed her death as a homicide, which "does not inherently mean a crime was committed." (FOX 9)
- No criminal charges have been filed at the federal or state level. (FOX 9; CNN; NPR, Oct. 1, 2026)
- Oct. 1, 2026Brent Ganger, her brother (as trustee for her next of kin), and Becca Good, her partner, filed two suits in U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota: No. 0:26-cv-04230 (against the United States) and No. 0:26-cv-04231 (against individual federal defendants). (AP; KSTP; FOX 9; WCCO)
- Lawsuit 1 (against the United States)wrongful death under Minnesota law; that the agent broke Homeland Security use-of-force rules against firing at moving vehicles; that no agent gave aid and a bystander who said he was a physician was turned away. It asks for a judge, not a jury. (AP; FOX 9; KSTP)
- The family's account: she had stopped on Portland Avenue to alert neighbors and was turning away when the agent fired. (complaints; KSTP)
- Lawsuit 2a civil-rights conspiracy claim under an 1871 federal law. It names the agent, current and former federal officials and ten unnamed agents, says the shots "were the predictable and intended product of the operation," and seeks a jury trial. We are not naming the individual defendants: none has been charged. (AP; NPR; FOX 9)
The government's position
- In January, federal officials said the agent acted in self-defense, "fearing for his life." (AP; FOX 9)
- Oct. 1, 2026: White House spokesperson Lauren Bis: "We intend to vigorously defend these baseless civil lawsuits." (NPR; CNN)
- DOJ did not immediately respond to the AP; DHS did not reply to WCCO, NPR or CNN. As of Oct. 8, 2026, we found no public response from either to the lawsuits.
What we don't know
- Whether the shooting was justified: no court has ruled.
- Whether anyone will be charged. Hennepin County says it is reviewing the evidence. (NPR)
What happens next
- Both cases are in federal court in Minnesota. We'll post a dated UPDATE here when they move.
Who she was
Her partner, Becca Good, on Oct. 1: "She was the center of my universe." (KSTP)
Please note
A complaint states one side's claims; no court has decided them. No one has been criminally charged.
