Mathew Betkouski, the “Unknown Wanderer” and the Tylenol murders: what we know
In December 1982, an unidentified man died by suicide inside a Catholic church in Boise, Idaho. For almost 44 years he was the "Unknown Wanderer." On Sept. 23, 2026, the Ada County Sheriff's Office identified him as Dr. Mathew Francis Betkouski and described a "possible connection" to the unsolved 1982 Chicago Tylenol murders. He was never charged, and no agency has named him a suspect.

What the record does not show
- Investigators cannot place him in Chicago when the poisonings happened.
- The cyanide found at his family's home was sodium cyanide. The Tylenol poisonings used potassium cyanide.
- He was never charged with any crime. No agency has named him a suspect.
What's disputed
- Experts are split. Dr. Park Dietz, a forensic psychiatrist who consulted on the original investigation, believes Betkouski fits. Jeremy Margolis, a former prosecutor on the case, is openly skeptical.
- Reports conflict on why he left Lockheed and on the alias's spelling, so we state neither.
- No agency has cleared him either. The question is open.
What happens next
The sheriff's office has shared its findings with Chicago police, Arlington Heights police and the FBI; both police departments say they are reviewing it. Sheriff Matt Clifford: "This isn't over." The Tylenol murders remain unsolved.
