On Sept. 28, 2026, twelve years after 43 students of the Ayotzinapa rural teachers' college disappeared in Iguala, Guerrero, officials presented four new lines of investigation. A new analysis of phone records from the night of Sept. 26-27, 2014 identified 17 people who had not been investigated before; they are under investigation. No one has been convicted over the disappearance. The families say the report leaves out the Army.
What's confirmed
- Sept. 26-27, 2014students of the Ayotzinapa teachers' college, travelling by bus to a protest in Mexico City, were stopped by local police in Iguala. Six people were killed that night; 43 students disappeared. (AFP; UPI; Mexico News Daily)
- Only three of the 43 have been identified. (CBS News/AFP; Mexico News Daily; UPI)
- Jan. 2015the government of the day called its account the "historical truth": police handed the students to the Guerreros Unidos cartel, which killed them and burned their remains. Independent experts rejected it. (UPI; AFP; El Financiero)
- Aug. 18, 2022a government truth commission concluded the disappearance "constituyó un crimen de Estado" (was a crime of the state). (Commission report p. 33, gob.mx; Al Jazeera; NPR)
- Feb. 2026a federal court (amparo 1350/2023) ordered the Army to hand over its 2014 intelligence files from its Iguala center, about 853 pages by the court's count. (El Financiero; LatinTimes)
- Sept. 28, 2026the Interior Ministry (Segob) and the FGR special prosecutor presented the report. Prosecutors say calls from that night connect cartel members, police, officials and people tied to Iguala funeral homes that also ran the city morgue. Searches there found an unregistered crematory oven and hundreds of bone fragments, under expert analysis. (Segob via Mexico News Daily; UPI; CBS News/AFP; Infobae)
- 168 people are being prosecuted, 130 in pretrial detention; 17 soldiers face charges. (CBS News/AFP; Mexico News Daily)
- Eight parents of the 43 have died. (Mexico News Daily; LatinTimes)
What we don't know / what's disputed
- Whether any of the remains match the students. No date has been given. (Infobae; Mexico News Daily)
- How many of the 17 are in custody. Officials haven't said. (Infobae; Mexico News Daily)
- The Army files. The families and Amnesty International México say the report leaves out the armed forces and the court-ordered files are still missing. The Defense Ministry says that, after a thorough review, it found nothing beyond what it had already delivered. President Claudia Sheinbaum: "No one is being covered up." (Infobae; El Financiero; Agencia Reforma; LatinTimes)
- The 2022 truth commission's own evidence was later questioned: its chair said a significant share could not be verified. (Courthouse News/NYT)
- A note on numbers: AFP reported "arrests of 17"; the officials' own presentation says the 17 were identified and are under investigation. We use the officials' wording.
What happens next
- Forensic results on the remains (FGR, with Argentine forensic experts).
- Whether the court enforces its order on the Army files.
